Event Description

Mid-September marks the peak of Broad-winged Hawk migration when it is possible to see hundreds or even thousands pass by the Greenlaw Mountain Hawk Watch (along with many other raptors). Join Jim Russell on Sunday, September 16 for the invigorating climb up to the breath-taking views of the Hawk Watch summit and assist the official counter, Todd Watts, as he tracks, identifies and records the passing raptors. It is an unparalleled opportunity to learn how to identify and photograph hawks in flight and contribute to this important citizen science conservation project. Stay tuned to Nature NB, Facebook GMHW or Facebook Nature Saint John, or www.saintjohnnaturalistsclub.org, for updates as rescheduling can occur due to the wind forecasts. Bring your lunch, sunscreen, camp-chair (optional), wear sturdy footwear, and dress in layers. The climb is on a gravel road with some quite steep sections. ( Degree of Difficulty – Moderate+). As numbers are limited to 12 for each trip, please pre-register with Joanne Savage by emailing davidsavage@rogers.com or by calling her at 847-4245. She will provide you with detailed information on meeting places and times in Saint John and St. Andrews and on preparing for the outing. Find us on Facebook as Greenlaw Mountain Hawk Watch. The GMHW is a project of the Saint John Naturalists Club and is supported by the NB Wildlife Trust Fund.
