Shawn, it's a combination of colour and other id points. The back is too dark [think of the colour being 'wet sand' for Semipalmated and very 'dry sand' for Piping Plover], the bird in your image has a larger bill than Piping. The breast band is too thick and complete for Piping. The face of Piping is very light as compared the bird in your image and lacks the black line across the face.

i definitely bow to more experienced birders. Is that based on the back colour or other characteristics as well?

Looks more like a semipalmated plover.
