Spruce Grouse

June 10, 2012 Minto. Had chicks, they hid, I took a pic and left it alone. (gotta add this to the list!)

Thanks Irene! Sheer luck to find this on the ground. It's hard to find any in the trees now.

Nice picture, you are getting to be quite the pro at taking these pictures,  perhaps you will get to get a  picture off the little ones... Best off luck. :o)

Denis, thats the one you shot at 3200 ISO! Merv there are no birds here ... I always find myself wanting to travel to places where you and everyone else goes to find all the birds aaakkkk! .... And thank you all for the nice comments!

I was on a back road in Minto 5 min from home ... saw a little chick ... stopped ... it hid ... the mother is so brave and never left, stayed within 10 feet of me. I took a pic and had to admire its bravery for its young ... I left. Was really astounding to see that.

Right on, Denis! I'd forgotten that re supercillium.

Beautiful Jimmy! Quite a find in that neck of the woods, too. Kudos! "Despite" the red supercilium, I would say this is actually a female, as she was guarding the chicks AND she has the strong barred pattern on the breast and neck, the lack of white tips on the upper tail coverts and a obviously discontinuous (broken) tail band. The female with chicks I photographed last year at Kouch also showed a red supercilium, but this is not mentioned as a field mark for females in Sibley's. Check it out:
