I was on a back road in Minto 5 min from home ... saw a little chick ... stopped ... it hid ... the mother is so brave and never left, stayed within 10 feet of me. I took a pic and had to admire its bravery for its young ... I left. Was really astounding to see that.

Comment by Denis A. Doucet on June 10, 2012 at 7:08pm: Beautiful Jimmy! Quite a find in that neck of the woods, too. Kudos! "Despite" the red supercilium, I would say this is actually a female, as she was guarding the chicks AND she has the strong barred pattern on the breast and neck, the lack of white tips on the upper tail coverts and a obviously discontinuous (broken) tail band. The female with chicks I photographed last year at Kouch also showed a red supercilium, but this is not mentioned as a field mark for females in Sibley's. Check it out:
