thanks everyone for your comments. dwayne, i think that all the males are superbly colored in season  but usually we don't get a photo of them sitting on a branch looking straight at us with the sun shinning just the right way. i just got very lucky with this one

As per Dwayne's comment, I have seen hundreds of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers over the years and never on with such a brilliant yellow belly.  Indeed, a Google image search reveals none so yellow as this.  As such, I would conclude that this is an abnormally plumaged bird and a very handsome fellow accordingly.  Thanks for posting it!

I look forward to others' comments; perhaps others have seen similarly plumaged birds.
