"I thought the antennae looked tabanid like, but the eyes did not fit, nor the wing position.  Robber flies have a deep depression between the eyes, so I excluded them.  I looked at some Therevids but have not come up with anything."

1. Flower Fly White-spotted Pond Fly Sericomyia lata  ID provided by Stuart2.   I checked T. Murray's book, but there doesn't seem to be a match. Very windy, so image is blurry. It's Xylophagidae - Coenomyia ferruginea ID provided by Tony…See More

Nancy I was there a few years back and found myself doing the same thing ... looking for dragonflies, and found lots of neat different ones than we have here. Only have to wait until mid May I hope!

Nancy, could I send you the original Canvasback photo, have you do the same editing and resend it back to me? I'll add you and then you can send me your e-mail address. Just let me know if that would be alright! Thanks

I tend more to use The Sibley Field Guide To Birds of Eastern North America. [ISBN 0-679-45120-X]. I've heard the new one is not as good. I also have a Roger Tory Peterson book. If you are technically minded, many folks use Apps for I phones, smart phones, I pod etc. I do have an I pod with Stokes photos and calls.
